A New Venture

After 20 years in the classroom and over two years in a state leadership position, I decided to make the leap to running my own business full time. I’ve worked with many reforms, large and small, in a variety of settings including high schools, colleges, universities, and states. To offer that experience to more schools and projects, I’ve moved into full time consulting. The goal is to bring a practitioner’s lens to the arena of math and the changes happening in math courses, curriculum, and policy. Math is such an important subject, having widespread impact on students well beyond their years in high school and college. It’s the subject that can be the difference in getting a degree and ultimately the kind of life a person wants to have. But should it have that much influence?

Solving your math problems is more than a slogan at Almy Education.

That idea and many more will be explored in this weekly blog. Each month, I will have posts that provide insight into issues related to math that are affecting teachers, administrators, and policy makers. We’ll get “in the weeds” and look at the details and issues behind implementation of reforms. But I will go one step further. It’s easy to pontificate and write a blog. It’s much harder to actually make changes and put ideas into action. “Solving your math problems” is more than a slogan at Almy Education. It’s the number one priority in everything we do. To illustrate that, each blog will close with an action step known as Putting it into practice.

The blogs will be posted each week, stay at reasonable length, and provide ideas that will allow you to move forward with ideas presented. You likely have many problems to solve, little time to do so, and need solutions yesterday. My goal is to meet those needs as best as I can. I look forward to sharing ideas and strategies along with updates and other information you may find valuable.

A note about content: Because I work in Illinois and have a lot of expertise with transitional math, I will initially be sharing about transitional math quite a bit. I will also be providing tools and ideas that can work for any state, but some upcoming offerings will be specifically for Illinois since there is a large need for implementation support. Regardless of your state or the math problem you are trying to solve, we will be providing services as well as weekly blogs for you. I will also be showcasing other consultants who are working with my business who will be providing additional services and expertise.
