This redesigned course, launched in Spring 2023, prioritizes mathematical thinking, active learning, and a growth mindset, resulting in positive early indicators of student success in subsequent college-level math.

Redesigning Developmental and Corequisite Math Courses at Manchester University
Facing low success and high withdrawal rates in developmental math, Manchester University eliminated its Basic Mathematics course and shifted to using High School GPA for student placement instead of a test. This redesign allowed significantly more students into college-level math, and by implementing improved pedagogy and a corequisite model for those with lower GPAs, the university maintained its overall pass rate of approximately 78%.

From Developmental Math to College Courses Outcomes of Waubonsee’s Summer Bridge Program
In response to the Developmental Education Reform Act, Waubonsee Community College, with the guidance of Almy Education and the ASPIRE program, designed and piloted a nine-day summer bridge program for students placed into developmental math. The pilot was a success, with 91% of the 48 enrolled students advancing at least one level in placement, and 71% enrolling in the subsequent fall semester.

Modernizing Math: Raising Pass Rates and Building Faculty Engagement at Mississippi University for Women
Facing declining post-pandemic pass rates in a key Statistics course, Mississippi University for Women utilized a federal Title III grant to hire Almy Education for an external intervention. This partnership successfully engaged faculty in professional development focused on modern instruction, leading to significantly increased student pass rates in Statistics and other math courses by 2023.

Implementing Corequisite College Algebra at Black Hawk College
After struggling with inconsistent placement and low success rates in College Algebra, Black Hawk College partnered with Almy Education to implement a corequisite model supported by ALEKS PPL for more accurate placement. This redesign—which included streamlined registration and blended course sections—led to a dramatic rise in success rates, jumping from 48.6% to 90.9% in the pilot semester.

Implementing a Summer Bridge Program at Waubonsee Community College
In response to state reform and high student attrition in developmental math, Waubonsee Community College piloted a nine-day summer bridge program designed to advance students' math placement. Of the 48 students who enrolled, 91% moved up at least one level, leading to 71% of participants enrolling in college courses the following fall semester.

How Effective Redesign Can Improve Developmental Math Outcomes
While redesigning traditional algebra-focused developmental math, coordinator Kathleen Almy recognized a need for content relevant to non-STEM students, leading her to help develop Math Literacy for College Students (Quantway), which created math pathways. This led to the creation of the textbook Math Lit, an accelerated, one-semester, contextualized option that resulted in success rates comparable to or better than traditional courses, with research showing Black and Latino men experiencing particularly strong gains.
