Dr. Kathleen Almy is the founder and CEO of Almy Educational Consulting, where she applies her passion for helping students succeed in college to every project. With a steadfast commitment to improving outcomes for every student facing a college math, English, or science requirement, she is a tenacious and passionate leader in educational reform.
As a seasoned educator with 25 years of experience in high school and college classrooms, Dr. Almy has taught all levels of mathematics, from basic math through calculus. This deep, practical understanding of classroom dynamics informs her strategic approach to systemic change. Before founding her consulting group, she spent over a decade leading impactful local, state, and national initiatives. Her leadership journey began with spearheading her college’s complete developmental math redesign, an experience that honed her ability to effect meaningful change.
Dr. Almy is widely recognized for her pivotal role in large-scale educational transformation. She led the implementation of Illinois's transitional math law, a complex initiative affecting over 700 high schools and nearly 50 community colleges. Prior to this, she dedicated nearly a decade to implementing "Math Literacy for College Students," a non-STEM pathways alternative to beginning algebra. This work involved extensive travel across the country to provide professional development for faculty, advocating for state-level policy changes, and co-authoring the leading textbook for the course, Math Lit.
Considered an expert and thought leader in developmental reform, pathways, and transitional programs, Dr. Almy's expertise is sought for numerous speaking engagements. She has delivered keynotes for organizations like the International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics (ICTCM) and has presented at dozens of national and state-level conferences. Her influence also extends to significant leadership positions, including serving as chair of the developmental math committee for AMATYC and representing Illinois in the development of the Carnegie Foundation's Quantway project.
